Johannesburg Planetarium
Johannesburg
Located in Whitswatersrand University, the Johannesburg Planetarium houses a telescope and projector that was previously owned by the Hamburg Council. When the plans to construct a planetarium were formed, such equipment was not readily available new, and so had to be sourced from elsewhere. The equipment was moved and completely rebuilt, and so the planetarium was born.
Opened in 1960, this was the first full-sized planetarium in Africa, and is still open for visitors today, offering shows and tours throughout the day for all ages. The shows aim to inspire and educate all visitors about the dazzling night-sky.
Stare into the sky and marvel at the beauty of the stars at night with the planetarium's countless tours and talks. At any time of day, there is always a show that will provide you with fascinating astrological information, and allow you to see the sky from a completely new viewpoint.
