Found in the famous Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site and neighbouring the equally impressive Sterkfontein Caves, the Wonder Cave of Kromdraai Valley is simply a breath-taking spectacle. Believed to be about 2.2 billion years old, it is the third largest chamber cave in the country and has produced some of the most stunning examples of humanoid and animal fossils. Yet visitors who take the lift down to the 125 metres-long and 154 metres-wide natural phenomenon will find much more to inspire here.
Some of the sights found in this immense chamber include stalactites and stalagmites (with some reaching up to 15 metres in height), not to mention the unique and distinctive “praying lady” formation that is still growing. There are also other mushroom, popcorn and straw formations, crystal-clear rimstone pools, cave pearls and also a colony of bats, so be sure to keep your head down and be on the lookout for any flying critters.
