Bag Factory

Johannesburg

Arts Arts and Culture

At a first glance, the Bag Factory is not your typical art studio, but as you stroll through the corrugated garage doors, you'll be transported into a collection of 18 airy studios displaying wonderfully inspired art work from all over South Africa.

Opened in 1991 by David Koloane, Pat Mautloa, Sam Nhlengethwa and Robert Loder, the Bag Factory aims to develop its inclusion and diversity programme via the form of art. It was originally set up to help provide support and assistance for black artists who up until then had very little success building their careers, and has now been the starting point for many prolific South African artists. The studio is strategically situated on the western edge of the city between the Oriental Plaza and the Newtown Cultural Precinct, making it readily accessible to all areas surrounding the city.

As part of the triangle arts trust, the Bag Factory runs a series of artist-led workshops encouraging the exchange of ideas and providing access to training and equipment. They also hold regular exhibitions as a platform for the artists, and their work is available for all to see throughout the year.
