Magalies Mountain Sanctuary Park
Johannesburg
Mountain Sanctuary Park is a private nature reserve in the Magaliesberg mountains, five hundred feet above the Grootfontein valley, and they offer you a great way in which to experience the natural splendour of the Magaliesberg.
From this park you can take pleasant walks, swim in mountain streams, watch a variety of wildlife going about its daily business, or just sit back, relax and unwind. But if you're looking to burn a few calories, you can head out on a variety of different mountain bike and hiking trails.
The position of the reserve allows easy access for visitors living in the greater Johannesburg area, and it is approximately 120 km west of Johannesburg and 90 km west of Pretoria. The reserve primarily focuses on hiking, and visitors have access to approximately 1000 hectares of land. One of the biggest draw-cards of this nature reserve is that you will not be restricted to set routes, and you will have the freedom to walk around as you like, either on-trail or off. There are a variety of suggested routes, and walking times and routes can vary anywhere between fifteen minutes and eight hours.
Over the years the reserve has become a haven for hikers, birdwatchers, botanists, game viewers and anyone else seeking refuge from the rigours of urban stress. There is also accommodation available in the reserve, which ranges from camping sites to chalets and log cabins, all of which are fitted with heaters for those cool winter nights.
