Mrs Eileen Orpen, a lover of wildlife and nature, bought a series of farms, totaling 24 528ha, on the Eastern/Central side of the Park, which she donated to the Kruger Park. For this generous gift, a memorial plaque in her honour was erected south of Tshokwane in 1944, Orpen Camp and Gate were named after, and the now well known Eileen Orpen Dam was named after her.
At the dam is a beautiful Hide, perched on the side of one of the hills overlooking the Dam. One can sit under here and admire different birds in the surrounding bush, as well as looking for animals coming down to the waters edge for a drink. This is generally a very peaceful and quiet viewpoint, and one well worth visiting.
The only facilities here a the toilets, situated at the far side of the small car park.
Eileen Orpen Dam is 7 km /15 min away from Tshokweni via the H1-2, H10, and S32 roads.
