The aim of the Johannesburg Hiking Club is to arrange hikes and related events for all outdoors enthusiasts, while at the same time to foster a sense of responsibility towards the environment. This aim is focused on all ages, both young and old, and they offer a variety of options that are both entertaining and informative.
The Hiking Club caters for all fitness levels and age groups. This is done by dividing groups into slow, medium minus, medium plus and fast groups. You can then pick a group according to your age and fitness level. It's important to remember that hiking is not simply a walk in the park - it often means hiking over rough terrain, walking where there are no paths or trails and steep ascents. But, just because you have to put in some hard work, it doesn't mean you won't have fun. And, when you eventually reach the top of the escarpment, the views will make all of the stress evaporate into the fresh mountain air.
But the Hiking Club believes that this rewarding activity must be enjoyed by as many people as possible, and as such they have a very active youth hiking section. And,as you will find out, hiking gives parents the opportunity to spend quality time with their children, as well as affording them a wonderful place to teach them to love, enjoy and respect nature.
As the Johannesburg Hiking Club will tell you, 'hiking is exhilarating, and everyone, at some stage in their lives, should experience the highs, the lows, the enjoyment, the disappointment - whatever - but hiking is fantastic.'
