Market on Main

Having only been on the go since 2011, Market on Main is Johannesburg's stella food and design market. Situated in the Maboneng Precinct's prestigious Art on Main complex, it draws in culinary experts, food lovers and ambitious chefs as well as design buffs.

They work to promote local economic development, by supporting small businesses from the area and have become the hub of Johannesburg's creative community with a blend of studio, commercial, retail and residential space.

There is always a wide selection of foods available for purchase, ranging from Ethiopian and Moroccan to Chinese, Italian and Indian. If that isn't to your fancy then there is a wide range of traditional South African dishes like bunny chow, boerie rolls and snoek on roosterbrood.

The design section upstairs displays locally designed clothes, furniture and crafts in amidst the attic of the wonderfully atmospheric 1900s warehouse space. You can browse the truly individual pieces whilst sipping a coffee or even a cocktail.

The majority of the stalls are indoors, but some of the eating areas are just outside. If the weather does turn and it starts to rain, there is plenty still happening inside to keep you going.
