Description

Walk in the footsteps of Nelson Mandela, a militant, anti-apartheid activist. Hear about how he was forced to serve 27 years in prison before becoming the first South African president to be elected in a full-representative democratic election. Visit Lielslief Farm, a popular heritage site honoring the South African liberation movement. The history of Liliesleaf Farm stretches back to 1961, to when it served as a nerve center for the liberation movement and was used by Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), the armed wing of the ANC, as a place to hideout from the state police and plan the overthrow of the apartheid government. Pass by the Chancellor House, where Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo ran the first black legal practice in the country from a modest three-story building during the 1950s at the height of apartheid. The major effort of their practice was to help those accused of crimes against the state, and of disobeying the oppressive laws. Ironically, some of the work carried out there led to later accusations of high treason, for which the two attorneys were arrested in 1956. Continue towards Soweto, Johannesburg’s Western Township and a symbol of fight for freedom. Finally, visit the Mandela House Museum on Vilakazi Street, Orlando West, where Nelson Mandela lived from 1946 to 1962.
