South Africa is a country of contrasts. On the one hand, there is the past, which will probably always be a dark stain on South Africa's history due to racial segregation.

Highlights

  • Sandhurst and Alexandra township
  • Indian market and African pharmacy
  • Baragwanath Hospital, Mandela House Museum

Description

ITINERARY With Sandton and Alexandra, we visit two townships that couldn't be more different and thus reflect the contrasting nature of South Africa very well. On the one hand, there is affluent Sandton, and on the other, the poorest township in South Africa, 'Alex,' as the locals call it. In both neighborhoods, you will get to know the locals and hear their stories firsthand. During the tour, you will learn about the history of the golden strike that gave birth to an entire nation, as well as the imperialism and discrimination that nearly wiped out that nation. We will also tell you about the unshakable human spirit that saved and liberated the nation. We will visit the Apartheid Museum, which brings the country's past back to life. A city tour of the African suburb of Soweto (South Western Townships), home to more than four million people, will give you a concrete idea of the reality of this country. On the way through Soweto, you will pass Baragwanath Hospital, the largest hospital in Africa. You will visit a kindergarten that is often attended by more than 70 children. You will see the memorial and museum honoring Hector Pieterson, one of the first children killed during the political unrest of 1976. Your next stop is the Mandela Family House Museum. This is where Mandela lived with his family.
