Description
Soweto played a pivotal role in South Africa’s journey to freedom. This walking tour offers an immersive experience of the township’s streets, culture, and history.
The tour starts at the Hector Pietersen Memorial, where you will learn about the 1976 Soweto Uprising, a significant event in the fight against Apartheid. You will then walk down Moema Street, retracing the route of the historic student march.
Next, you will visit Nelson Mandela’s house on Vilakazi Street. You will have 20 minutes to explore inside the house where Mandela lived before his imprisonment (entrance fee not included). The tour continues to Desmond Tutu’s house, another important Soweto landmark.
Lunch is served at a local eatery, offering an opportunity to sample traditional cuisine. Afterward, the group travels by minibus taxi to Orlando East, experiencing local transport firsthand, and visits Soweto Towers.
The final stop is Nomzamo Park, an informal settlement where you will learn about the daily lives of many Soweto residents.
