Description

Origin: They are primarily descendants of Dutch, German, and French Huguenot settlers who arrived in South Africa from the 17th century onward, beginning with the establishment of a refreshment station at the Cape by the Dutch East India Company in 1652. Language: Their language is Afrikaans, which developed from the 17th-century Dutch spoken by the initial settlers. Afrikaans is one of the 11 official languages of South Africa. Culture and History: The Great Trek: A defining historical event for Afrikaners was the mass migration (Groot Trek) of Dutch-speaking settlers inland during the 1830s and 1840s, seeking independence from British rule at the Cape. The Boer Wars: Afrikaners, also known as Boers (Dutch for 'farmers'), fought the British in the two Anglo-Boer Wars (1880–1881 and 1899–1902) over control of the independent Boer republics (the Orange Free State and the South African Republic/Transvaal). Apartheid: A key part of 20th-century history, the National Party, predominantly an Afrikaner political party, implemented the policy of apartheid (Afrikaans for 'separateness') from 1948 to 1994.
