Description
The tour begins with pick-up from your Johannesburg address and a meeting point at FNB Soccer Stadium on Soweto’s outskirts. Your guide provides a background on the stadium’s significance before the journey into Soweto. Along the way, you pass Baragwanath Hospital, a large taxi rank, and the historic suburb of Diepkloof.
Your first stop is Motsoaledi informal settlement where you walk through streets lined with cafés and craft markets to a community centre supported by MoAfrika. Engage with locals and learn about daily life in the settlement.
Next, the tour continues to Orlando West, stopping outside Regina Mundi Church and Freedom Square for an overview. You then visit Hector Pieterson Museum for a formal guided tour.
Following this, you walk down Vilakazi Street, passing landmarks including the homes of Nelson and Winnie Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Time permitting, you may choose to visit Nelson Mandela Museum at your own expense.
The morning concludes at Soweto Towers, where lunch is served at a traditional Soweto restaurant (beverages excluded). After lunch, you can browse the craft market or, if time allows, participate in bungee jumping from the towers at your own cost. The tour ends with a return transfer to your Johannesburg accommodation.
