Description

Soweto is South Africa's largest township and a center of diverse urban culture, made up of 32 townships housing various ethnic groups. Since the 1994 democratic elections, Soweto has experienced significant social and economic changes, reflecting both challenges and growth within its communities.

The tour begins with a hotel or guest house pickup and enters Soweto through Diepkloof Extension. You stop at the Soweto welcome sign for photos and an introduction to the area's demographics and history.

Next, the tour visits Diepkloof hostels and family units, highlighting a housing project initiated by former President Nelson Mandela. You will pass notable sites such as Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, the Orlando Towers, Johannesburg University’s Soweto campus, and the Rea Vaya bus station en route to Vilakazi Street, home to Mandela House. The tour includes a visit inside Mandela House.

The route continues to the Hector Pieterson Memorial, commemorating a 13-year-old boy killed during the 1976 Soweto student uprising. The guide provides background on the uprising and South Africa’s liberation struggle. Note that the Hector Pieterson Museum is closed on Mondays, and entrance fees are optional.
