Description
Depart Johannesburg for a 1.5-hour drive along the N1 highway to Parys, covering approximately 130 km. Meet your guide, Prof. Graeme Addisson, a leading expert who has published extensively on the Vredefort Dome.
Visit his bed and breakfast, Otters’ Haunt, located on the Vaal River, one of the oldest rivers and the only major river cutting directly through the meteorite crater. Here, attend a 90-minute presentation (self-funded) explaining the Dome’s geology and history, followed by a Q&A session.
Afterward, explore various parts of the Dome area by vehicle, observing geological formations and the crater’s impact. Pause for lunch (own expense) at a nearby location before returning toward Johannesburg. Time permitting, stop at the Sharpeville massacre site, commemorating the 1960 event.
The tour concludes with a return to your departure point through notable northern Johannesburg suburbs.
