Description

Pilanesberg National Park sits inside the crater of a volcano that last erupted 1.2 billion years ago, one of the largest and best preserved alkaline ring complexes on Earth. For most of the twentieth century the land inside that crater was farmland, its wildlife long since hunted out. In 1979, conservationists reversed that in a single project: Operation Genesis, still the largest game translocation ever attempted anywhere in the world, moved more than 6,000 animals across 20-plus species into a newly fenced 55,000-hectare reserve. Elephants returned after more than 150 years absent from the region. Lions followed in 1993. What you drive through today is that reserve, four and a half decades on. You'll spend the night at Bakubung Bush Lodge, whose name means 'people of the hippo' in Setswana, a reference to the resident pod that lives in the waterhole the lodge overlooks. After checking in, there's time to explore the grounds, from the pool deck over the hippo pool to the Marula Grill, before the light softens for your first game drive. The sunset drive heads out as temperatures drop and the reserve's nocturnal and crepuscular species start to stir. Your ranger reads tracks and signs as much as scans the horizon, and can talk you through how Operation Genesis shaped the populations you're seeing today, from elephant herds with roots in Addo Elephant Park stock to the rhino that make Pilanesberg one of South Africa's more reliable Big Five reserves. Dinner back at the lodge follows. Before sunrise the next morning, head out again while the reserve is at its most active, when predators returning from a night's hunting are more likely to be seen alongside elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and a range of antelope. Back at the lodge, breakfast and a final stretch of downtime close out the stay before the drive back to Johannesburg. Two extensions are available to book at the time of reservation: a third game drive with lunch included, for guests who want one more pass at the Big Five, or a half-day stop at Sun City, around 15 minutes from the park gate, before the return journey.
