Magaliesberg Meander

Just a short westward drive out of Joburg you'll find yourself in some of the most serene and beautiful natural surroundings that will rival most places in the country - in the heart of the Magaliesberg Mountains. When you feel like you need a break from the fast-paced hustle and bustle of Jozi, it makes perfect sense to unwind in the outdoors, and few places will be able to satisfy your craving for nature as well as the Magaliesberg. Over the years, plenty of tourist attractions have sprung up in and around these Mountains, and this entire area is generally referred to as the Magaliesberg Meander

The Magalies Meander road boundaries

Although there is no generally accepted definition of the boundaries of the Magalies Meander, we accept that it should comprise the area in the map above, which encompasses the Hartbeespoort Dam, The Cradle of Humankind and The Buffelspoort Valley Conservancy on the northern side of the Mountains - in North West Province. Many of the sights, accommodations and activities lie in between the picturesque Magaliesberg Mountains and the Witwatersrand, alongside the Magalies River and within the village of Magaliesberg itself. Whether you are staying at one of the many luxurious country and game lodges or camping in the relaxing bushveld area, the R560 road that runs through the heart of this region is the main reference point; from here it is possible to reach many of the attractions in the quickest time possible.

To the east, the R24 leads to the Olifantsnek Dam and venturing down many of the side roads will lead travellers to fishing spots, areas of beautiful wild fauna and olive trees, towering rocky outcrops and other natural wonders to marvel at. Heading in the opposite direction will lead to the region’s other dam, the Hartebeespoort. Before reaching this destination, though, be on the lookout for some of the finest natural activities to be found in the area, including the Uitkyk Hiking Trail – with stunning views overlooking the dam, woodlands, rock pools and the surrounding mountains – horseback and quad bike trail rides, lodges and restaurants boasting spectacular views.

With so much to see over such a wide and diverse landscape, exploring the Magalies Meander region is an unforgettable experience. Whether you are visiting on business, a short-term excursion, pursuing a special interest or just out for the day with the family, there’s a strong chance you’ll discover a reason to lose yourself within these inspirational surroundings.

What’s more, with the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site only half an hour from Sandton, you'll be able to visit the Maropeng Visitor Centre and the Sterkfontein Caves for an absolutely fascinating tour, during which you'll learn about how mankind originated in this area many millions of years ago!

Don't leave Joburg without exploring the Magalies Meander Region - you'll be very surprised at what you will find here!
